The presence of lupus nephritis additionally increases the risk of preeclampsia among pregnant women with systemic lupus erythematosus

Bremme K, Honkanen S, Gunnarsson I, et al. - Researchers aimed at comparing the obstetric outcomes in a Swedish cohort of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with and without lupus nephritis (LN). A retrospective observational study was performed on 103 women with SLE delivering at the Karolinska University Hospital; of these women, 35 had previous or active LN and 68 women had non-renal lupus. Outcomes revealed a significant value of lupus nephritis as a risk factor for adverse obstetric outcomes in women with SLE, including preeclampsia. More frequent antenatal controls and more vigorous follow-up could benefit these patients.
