The presence of diabetes and higher HbA1c are independently associated with adverse outcomes after surgery
Diabetes Care Apr 01, 2018
Yong PH, et al. - The interconnection between diabetes, defined categorically and HbA1c as a continuous measure, with postoperative outcomes, was examined by the authors in surgical inpatients aged ≥54 years at a tertiary hospital. Diabetes was reported in almost one-third of surgical inpatients age ≥54 years. It was determined that diabetes was related to increased 6-month mortality, major complications, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission, mechanical ventilation, and hospital length of stay (LOS). Data shed light on an independent correlation between diabetes and higher HbA1c with a higher risk of adverse outcomes after surgery.
