The preoperative prognostic nutritional index predicts short-term and long-term outcomes of patients with stage II/III gastric cancer: Analysis of a multi-institution dataset
Digestive Surgery Mar 10, 2019
Sasahara M, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the predictive value of preoperative prognostic nutritional index (PNI) for postoperative short-term and long-term outcomes in patients with gastric cancer. They performed an analysis of a multicenter dataset of 842 eligible patients with stage II/III gastric cancer who underwent gastrectomy between 2010 and 2014. Findings revealed significantly shorter disease-free and overall survival of patients in the PNI-low group compared to those in the PNI-high group. The subgroup of patients who underwent total gastrectomy showed a significantly greater prognostic difference between the PNI-high and PNI-low groups. The PNI-low group more frequently showed clinically relevant postoperative complications. Findings thus support the utility of the preoperative PNI as a predictor reflecting the incidence of complications after gastrectomy and the prognosis of these patients.
