The potential role of testosterone in hypertension and target organ damage in hypertensive postmenopausal women

Clinical Interventions in Aging Jun 02, 2019

Li N, et al. - Via conducting a matched group study involving two groups of participants, researchers ascertained the potential role of testosterone in hypertension and target organ damage (TOD) in hypertensive postmenopausal women. Group 1 consisted of 161 hypertensive postmenopausal women aged between 45 and 65 years. Group 2 included 161 age-matched hypertensive men. Except for the mean level and load of the nocturnal systolic blood pressure, women exhibited lower mean and load levels of blood pressure than men. A higher carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) was detected in women vs men. Women had an impaired ratio of the early diastolic mitral peak flow velocity to early diastolic mitral annular velocity. A positive correlation between testosterone and cf-PWV was evident in women. Based on these findings, a possible role of testosterone in the correlation between hypertension and TOD was suggested in hypertensive postmenopausal women.
