The population prevalence, associations of congenital heart defect and mortality risk for Down syndrome in South Korea based on National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) data
Clinical Epidemiology May 30, 2020
Cho WK, Lee NY, Han K, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from National Health Insurance Service and Rare Diseases Registry, to estimate the population prevalence, links of congenital heart defect (CHD) and death risk for DS. They compared data of DS patients with 1:5 age- and gender-matched controls, to estimate links of CHD and death risk of DS. They noted that in 2015, the DS population prevalence was 4.03 per 100,000 individuals in South Korea. In this study, a greater chance of accompanying CHD (atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, tetralogy of fallot, or atrioventricular septal defect) and higher mortality risk were observed among people with DS vs healthy controls.
