The outcomes of percutaneous kyphoplasty in treatment of the secondary osteoporotic vertebral compression factures: A case-control study

Annals of Translational Medicine Apr 04, 2018

Wu AM, et al. - The consequences of using percutaneous kyphoplasty was examined by the authors in the treatment of the secondary osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. In order to evaluate the back pain and functional outcomes, Visual Analogue Scales (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were used. Obtained data exhibited significantly relieved back pain, improved functional outcomes, corrected kyphotic angulation and restored compression ratio after operation in both the secondary fracture group and control group. Nonetheless, no variation as reported between 2 groups. Therefore, it was demonstrated that percutaneous kyphoplasty was an effective and safe procedure for patients with secondary single segmental osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, possibly yielding similar clinical outcomes to the primary osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures.
