The oral cavity tumor thickness: Measurement accuracy and consequences for tumor staging
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Jun 08, 2019
de Koning SGB, et al. - Researchers sought to evaluate the accuracy of their clinical staging of oral cavity cancer via evaluating the accuracy of measurements of the tumor dimensions on ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and comparing this with the histopathology as the “golden standard”. Further, the pathological tumor staging of these tumors according to the 7th edition of the AJCC/UICC cancer staging system (AJCC7) and AJCC8 was compared, in order to appraise how the incorporation of the depth of invasion in the AJCC8 has impacted. In a retrospective analysis of 85 oral cavity tumors, US more reliably measured tumor thickness, whereas MR more reliably measured greatest dimension. In 21% of the cases, the AJCC8 staging resulted into a higher tumor stage, compared to the AJCC7, with an associated worse prognosis for the patient.
