The optimal concentration of bupivacaine and levobupivacaine for labor pain management using patient-controlled epidural analgesia: A double-blind, randomized controlled trial
International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia May 23, 2018
Baliuliene V, et al. - Researchers assessed the efficacy and safety of different low concentrations of two local anesthetics for labor analgesia using patient-contolled epidural analgesia in healthy nulliparous women. Patients were administered epidural analgesia using local anesthetic and fentanyl and based on the concentration of bupivacaine or levobupivacaine, they were allocated to six groups. At different time points, assessment of analgesic efficacy, vital parameters, and side effects was done. The primary outcome was the total dose of local anesthetic used. Findings demonstrated that as a result of administering higher local anesthetic concentration, higher total doses were infused and a greater motor block was achieved. The lowest concentrations provided less effective labor analgesia, without influencing patient satisfaction.
