The optimal age to stop endoscopic surveillance of Barrett’s esophagus patients based on gender and comorbidity: A comparative cost-effectiveness analysis
Gastroenterology May 12, 2021
Omidvari AH, Hazelton WD, Lauren BN, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for determining the optimal age for last surveillance of non-dysplastic Barrett’s esophagus (NDBE) patients stratified by gender and level of comorbidity. They used three independently developed models to simulate patients with NDBE who differed in age, gender, and comorbidity level (no, mild, moderate, severe). All participants had received regular surveillance until their current age. The benefit of having another surveillance endoscopy was strongly influenced by age, gender, and comorbidity. The comparative modeling analysis demonstrates the importance of taking comorbidity status and gender into account when deciding when to discontinue surveillance in patients with NDBE.
