The nasal microbiome in asthma
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Mar 11, 2018
Fazlollahi M, et al. - In order to identify nasal microbiota associated with asthma activity, researchers herein characterized the nasal microbiome of subjects with exacerbated asthma, non-exacerbated asthma, and healthy controls. The difference was obvious in the nasal microbiome composition in subjects with exacerbated asthma, non-exacerbated asthma, and healthy controls. The nasal microbiota of asthmatics vs controls was enriched with taxa from Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria. Prevotella buccalis, Dialister invisus, Gardnerella vaginalis, and Alkanindiges hongkongensis were differentially abundant based on asthma status. Moreover, quantitative PCR confirmed species overrepresentation in asthma vs controls for Prevotella buccalis and Gardnerella vaginalis.
