The moderating role of allergy immunotherapy in asthma progression: Results of a population-based cohort study
Allergy Aug 20, 2019
Schmitt J, et al. - Using healthcare data (2005 to 2014) from statutory health insurance in Germany, researchers performed this population-based cohort study to investigate if allergy immunotherapy (AIT) can prevent progression from milder to more severe asthma. According to the treatment steps suggested by the global initiative for asthma (GINA), they categorized the severity of asthma. Using multivariable Cox regression models adjusted for age and sex, they determined the influence of AIT on the transition between the GINA steps. In this observational investigation, the likelihood of experiencing progression of asthma severity was less in patients with allergic asthma who receive AIT vs asthma patients not receiving AIT in a real-world setting.
