The mediating effect of pain catastrophizing on PTSD symptoms and pain outcome
Clinical Journal of Pain Jun 12, 2019
Gilliam W, et al. - Utilizing a series of mediation analyses, researchers investigated if the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology and chronic pain outcome is mediated by pain catastrophizing. At a 3-week interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation program admission, completion of a battery of psychometrically validated measures of pain severity, pain interference, pain catastrophizing, depressive symptoms, and PTSD symptoms, was done by a total of 203 treatment-seeking participants. Results suggest the possible value of pain catastrophizing as a relevant cognitive mechanism through which PTSD symptoms influence the experience of chronic pain. It seems that both chronic pain and PTSD could be significantly reduced by psychosocial treatment approaches that directly target the tendency to catastrophize in response to pain.
