Pediatrics International Feb 19, 2020
Kurahachi T, Hashizume N, Asagiri K, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers determined the frequency and nature of pediatric blunt chest-abdominal injuries (BCAIs) and summarized the management of BCAIs, ranging from non-operative management (NOM) with or without angioembolization (AE) to surgical treatment. The age, injury pattern, organs of injury, outcome, and treatment have been summarized. One hundred and thirty-two cases (mean age 7.68 years; range 1-15 years) have been summarized. Findings revealed that there were no injured organs in 31 cases, while there were 130 injured organs in 101 cases, including the liver, spleen, lung, kidney, intestine, pancreas, and adrenal gland. The management of organ injury shall take into account the integrated management of bleeding. Children with severe organ damage are recommended to be treated at dedicated trauma centers where AE is available.
