The malignancy risk assessment of cytologically indeterminate thyroid nodules improves markedly by using a predictive model
European Thyroid Journal Dec 04, 2018
Öcal B, et al. – Researchers developed an individualized model to accurately predict cancer risk in patients with cytologically indeterminate thyroid nodules. For this purpose, they retrospectively reviewed clinical reports, ultrasound images, and cytopathology reports of patients who had thyroidectomy. They used logistic regression analysis to determine the predictive ability of each malignancy variable, and built a nomogram by incorporating various clinical and patient demographic variables. The Bethesda category “suspicious for malignancy,” microcalcifications, and irregular margins were found to be independent risk factors for malignancy. Overall, they found that the nomogram accurately predicted the risk of malignancy of thyroid nodules with indeterminate cytology using clinical, cytological and ultrasonographic characteristics.
