The long-term effect of perinatal asphyxia on hippocampal volumes
Pediatric Research Jul 21, 2018
Annink KV, et al. - This analysis focused on the impact of hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) on hippocampal volumes in 9- to 10-year-old children as well as examined the relationship between hippocampal volumes and previously found impaired memory and cognitive functions in the current cohort. Participants in the study were 26 children with mild HIE, 26 with moderate HIE, and 37 controls. Researchers reported that children with moderate HIE had smaller hippocampal volumes than controls, with a trend toward smaller volumes following mild HIE. It was observed that reduced hippocampal volumes were correlated with poorer long-term visuospatial memory.
