The levels of soluble forms of CD21 and CD83 in multiple sclerosis

Journal of Neuroimmunology Apr 21, 2018

Karampoor S, et al. - CD21 and CD83 have both been shown to aid in the resolution of inflammation occurring in multiple sclerosis (MS), and have also been ascribed to Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infection (the prime suspect of MS causality). So researchers evaluated the serum concentrations of soluble forms of CD21 and CD83 in MS patients divided into two groups: those who were receiving interferon-beta (185 MS patients) and fingolimod (70 MS patients) vs healthy individuals. In serum samples of MS patients, sCD21 was markedly decreased and sCD83 was elevated vs controls. A significant association between the expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and the levels of both soluble CD21 (sCD21) and soluble CD83 (sCD83) was shown. A correlation was also seen between the levels of sCD21 and sCD83 and the titers of EBV. Overall, it appears that both sCD21 and sCD83 might be good biomarkers for monitoring disease activity.
