The ketogenic and modified Atkins diet therapy for children with refractory epilepsy of genetic etiology
Pediatric Neurology Feb 28, 2019
Jagadish S, et al. - Fifty-nine kids were assessed to examine the effectiveness and safety of the ketogenic and modified Atkins diets on seizure frequency in adolescents with refractory epilepsy of genetic etiology. The traditional ketogenic diet was given to about 90% of patients, while six patients were given a modified Atkins diet. They noted vomiting (24%), hypoglycemia (15%), and refusal to feed (11%) at the initiation of diet. Due to poor compliance, severe reflux, and ketoacidosis, three kids stopped the diet before discharge. They suggested the ketogenic diet is an effective treatment modality in these patients.
