The involvement of primary care physicians in care for childhood cancer survivors
Pediatric Blood & Cancer May 02, 2019
Streefkerk N, et al. - In this investigation involving 602 childhood cancer survivors (CCS) and 1204 controls, researchers studied the volume and underlying health problems of primary care physician (PCP)-based health care use and the determinants for PCP-based health care use in CCS. Data from a Dutch cohort of 6018 eligible five-year CCS have been linked to the Nivel Primary Care database containing detailed data from a representative sample of 10% of all Dutch PCPs. Investigators found that PCPs play a key role in CCS care. For more PCP contacts, female sex, higher age, and radiotherapy treatment were determinants. CCS uses more PCP-based care than matched controls, primarily for severe conditions such as malignancies, hematology and endocrine. The outcomes highlight the importance of disseminating current knowledge about CCS long-term morbidity and their optimal follow-up care among PCPs.
