The intra-operative use of biological products: A multi-centre regional patient perspective of a potential consenting conundrum
Clinical Otolaryngology May 27, 2019
Jolly K, et al. - In view of the increasing use of biological products in surgery with limited awareness of the origins of the used products among surgeons, researchers sought for patient perspective on intra-operative use of biological products. Conflict with patient's religious, personal and/ or ethical beliefs may arise if surgeons do not routinely consent for the use of biological products intra-operatively. In the study population, 44% wanted to know if biological products are to be used in surgery and 17% objected to the use of these products in surgery. As per these observations, they recommend including the use of biological products in the consent taking process with clear documentation, to avoid any medico-legal ramification in the future.
