The influence of time-to-surgery on mortality after a hip fracture
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Jan 29, 2020
Kristiansson J, et al. - Since the influence of time-to-surgery on mortality in acute hip fracture (AHF) patients has been debated, researchers examined the link between time-to-surgery and 30-day mortality in this retrospective analysis. They analyzed variables such as age, gender, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification, surgical method (prosthesis or osteosynthesis) and time-to-surgery, as well as 30-day mortality, by utilizing data from 9,270 AHF patients. Findings revealed increased mortality experienced by AHF patients in relation to a time-to-surgery exceeding 39-48 hours. No increased mortality was observed among patients with surgeries done before 39-48 hours, and this time may, in some patients, be used for optimization before the operation even if time-to-surgery exceeds 24 hours.
