The influence of menopause in multiple sclerosis course: A longitudinal cohort study
European Neurology Jan 18, 2019
Ladeira F, et al. - In this retrospective longitudinal cohort study, researchers assessed the influence of menopause on the disease activity and disability progression of multiple sclerosis (MS). Participants in the study were all women over the age of 44 who were post-menopausal who were diagnosed with MS at least 1 year prior to menopause. In the analysis, 37 women with a mean age at the time of menopause of 49.8 (±4.06) years were involved. After menopause, they noted a decrease in the relapse rate, but the progression of the disability continued at a similar rate to that seen in the pre-menopause period. These observations endured in the subgroup of patients diagnosed during the observation period without any changes in disease-modifying treatment (DMT) or co-morbidities.
