The incidence, risk factors, and patterns of peripherally inserted central catheter-related venous thrombosis in cancer patients followed up by ultrasound

Cancer Management and Research Jun 04, 2021

Li X, Wang G, Yan K, et al. - Researchers retrospectively analyzed cancer patients who had peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement, to determine the incidence, risk factors, and patterns of PICC-related venous thromboembolism (VTE) in this population. Development of PICC-related VTE was found in 165 patients (7.01%) among 2,353 PICCs placed, with a median thrombosis time of 12 days. Factors that were identified to be significantly related to PICC-related VTE included: the non-O blood group, larger ratio of PICC diameter:vein diameter, and high level of triglycerides. Anticoagulation treatment could result in reversal of almost half of cases of PICC-related deep VTE.
