The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting after cesarean section in patients with hyperemesis gravidarum: A retrospective cohort study
International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia Jul 23, 2020
Jacobs N, Veronese L, Okano S, et al. - Researchers investigated if hyperemesis gravidarum during pregnancy is linked with nausea and vomiting after cesarean section. For this single-center, retrospective cohort study, they identified 76 patients with hyperemesis gravidarum and 315 patients without the condition, undergoing cesarean section from 2015 to 2019. The two groups had postoperative nausea and vomiting incidences of 43.4% and 29.6%, respectively. Findings thereby suggest a higher likelihood of developing nausea and vomiting after cesarean section among patients with hyperemesis gravidarum, and this is likely to be of greater severity than in those without the condition. This may aid in undertaking effective provision of intra-operative and postoperative anti-emetics for cases with hyperemesis gravidarum undergoing cesarean section.
