The incidence of neoplasia in patients with autoimmune metaplastic atrophic gastritis: A renewed call for surveillance
Annals of Gastroenterology Feb 08, 2019
Mahmud N, et al. - In order to clarify endoscopic best practices, researchers identified the prevalence and incidence rates of dysplasia or adenocarcinoma in patients with autoimmune metaplastic atrophic gastritis (AMAG). In a tertiary medical center, 150 patients diagnosed with AMAG on endoscopic gastric biopsy between 1/2010 and 11/2015 were included. The prevalence of adenocarcinoma was 5.3% on index endoscopy. The incidence rate of adenocarcinoma was 14.2 cases per 1000 person-years, which far exceeds that of the general population based on Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data. In 47% of patients, pernicious anemia (PA) was present. The results of this retrospective study indicated that AMAG was related to the high prevalence and incidence of gastric cancer and should be considered for endoscopic surveillance.
