The incidence of cancer and mortality in paediatric onset inflammatory bowel disease in Denmark and Finland during a 23-year period: A population-based study
Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics May 13, 2019
Malham M, et al. - Researchers estimated cancer and mortality risk in the Danish and Finnish paediatric onset inflammatory bowel disease (pIBD) population [defined as persons registered with Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC) or IBD-unclassified prior to their 18th birthday from 1992 to 2014 in the national patient register] as compared to the general population over a 23-year period in this population-based study. They identified 6689 patients with pIBD. In general, the standardized cancer incidence ratio was 2.6 and 2.5 in CD and UC. In CD and UC respectively, the standardized mortality ratios were 2.2 and 3.7. Cancer, suicide and infections were the leading causes of mortality. The authors concluded that increased cancer and mortality risk was found in pIBD. This highlights the importance of cancer monitoring programs and mental health assessment in the standard of care in adolescent patients with pIBD.
