The impact of work-related rhinitis on quality of life and work productivity: A general workforce-based survey
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Feb 20, 2020
Vandenplas O, et al. - Researchers compared individuals with work-related rhinitis (WRR) vs those with rhinitis unrelated to work and those without rhinitis, focusing on the quality of life (QoL) and work productivity. For this purpose, they performed a cross-sectional survey including workers randomly selected at the time of their periodic occupational health visit in the French-speaking part of Belgium. Three groups of participants were defined: non-WRR (current nasal symptoms not associated with work, n = 329); WRR (current rhinitis with ≥ 2 nasal symptoms at work, n = 161); and controls (no nasal symptom; n = 1,155). Greater impairment in the physical and mental health components of the Medical Outcome Study Short Form-8 instrument and the overall work productivity was evident in relation to both WRR and non-WRR vs controls, whereas these outcomes were more influenced in WRR vs non-WRR. Overall, an incremental adverse influence of WRR on QoL and work productivity was revealed that need to be addressed so that the global burden of rhinitis may be reduced.
