The impact of tumor location on the biological and oncological differences of colon cancer: Multi-institutional propensity score-matched study

American Journal of Surgery Jul 19, 2018

Kishiki T, et al. - Patients with tumors truly located in the right vs left side of the colon were analyzed for differences in clinical and pathological features, recurrence, and predictive impact of tumor location. Findings reveal that for recurrence-free survival, left-sided colon cancer was a significant risk factor in stage I-II patients, however, right-sided colon cancer was identified as a significant risk factor for after recurrence cancer-specific survival in stage III patients.

Methods

  • In total, 6,790 stage I-III colon cancer patients who had curative resection were included.
  • Using propensity score matching, balancing of patient characteristics was performed.

Results

  • Compared to the right-sided colon cancer group, left-sided groups displayed higher recurrence rates in stage I and II patients, indicating significantly shorter recurrence free survival of left-sided colon cancer patients than that of the right-sided patients.
  • In stage III patients that experienced recurrence, significantly shorter cancer specific survival after recurrence was observed among the right-sided colon cancer patients than the left-sided patients (P=0.003).
