The impact of total sleep deprivation upon cognitive functioning in firefighters
Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment May 18, 2018
Kujawski S, et al. - Researchers studied the impact of total sleep deprivation (TSD) on cognitive functioning in a group of firefighters. This study was conducted on 60 volunteers who were active male fire brigade officers. In the second attempt of simple reaction time (SRT) test, subjects committed significantly more errors and, consequently, noted a smaller number of correct responses, however, the remaining results exhibited reversed direction of TSD influence. Data displayed that TSD potentially leads to worse performance in a relatively easy task in a group of firefighters. They suggested that errors during repetitive tasks in firefighting routines could potentially translate into catastrophic consequences.
