The impact of synchronous liver resection on the risk of anastomotic leakage following elective colorectal resection. A propensity score match analysis on behalf of the iCral study group

European Journal of Surgical Oncology Jun 06, 2021

Guerra F, Petrelli F, Greco PA, et al. - In order to determine the best management approach for patients with colorectal cancer and synchronous liver metastasis, researchers investigated the relative risk of anastomotic leak (AL) in patients receiving isolated colorectal resection vs. patients undergoing colorectal resection in combination with liver metastasis resection. From the iCral prospectively maintained database, they identified a total of 996 patients who underwent colorectal resection for cancer. Of these patients, they matched and compared 206 receiving isolated colorectal resection with a group of 53 patients undergoing simultaneous liver and colorectal resection. As per outcomes, the risk of anastomotic leakage is not significantly higher in correlation with undergoing simultaneous colorectal and liver resection vs colorectal resection alone.
