The impact of statin therapy on neurological events following left ventricular assist system implantation in advanced heart failure
The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation Mar 11, 2020
Vieira JL, Pfeffer M, Claggett BL, et al. - Researchers undertook this single centre, retrospective, observational cohort analysis to determine the link between the use of statin therapy and subsequent development of neurological events, especially stroke, after continuous-flow left ventricular assist systems (CF-LVAS) implantation. The study sample comprised 200 consecutive adults implanted with a durable CF-LVAS. Findings revealed lower rates of neurological events in correlation with statin prescription after CF-LVAS, driven mainly by a decrease in ischemic strokes. According to these findings, the use of statins after CF-LVAS may be continued in most patients with a pre-existing indication for statin therapy, in an attempt to reduce the incidence of ischemic stroke.
