The impact of shift work on migraine: A case series and narrative review
Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain Sep 10, 2019
Sandoe CH, et al. - Researchers examined the risk for chronification of migraine in relation to shift work, which by definition leads to atypical or irregular sleep cycles, along with poor quality sleep. Performing a narrative review of the literature, they identified sparsity and conflicting results of previous literature on the relationship between shift work and migraine. More recent studies suggest the possibile value of shift work as risk factor for migraine-related disability. The case histories of 2 shift workers with migraine indicated an association of shift work with chronification of migraine and higher headache-related disability despite optimal headache management and good patient adherence. Following initiation of night shift work, both patients reported a worsening of their headaches. Switching back to day shifts led to an improvement in both these cases. Putting back on night shifts worsened their condition. Following complete elimination of night shifts and maintaining a good sleep routine, their headache patterns finally reverted from chronic to episodic migraine.
