The impact of radiotherapy on reoperation rates in patients undergoing mastectomy and breast reconstruction
Annals of Surgical Oncology Mar 08, 2019
Zhang L, et al. - In this retrospective analysis, researchers determined the effect of postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) on reoperation rates in 832 breast cancer patients treated with mastectomy and breast reconstruction with (n=159) or without (n=673) PMRT. Outcomes suggest an increased risk of unanticipated reoperations in correlation with PMRT among patients receiving implant-based reconstruction, but not autologous reconstruction. They recommend considering the risk of reoperation when selecting the appropriate breast reconstruction type when PMRT is planned.
