The impact of pre- and post-stroke statin use on stroke severity and long-term outcomes: A population-based cohort study

Cerebrovascular Diseases Jul 19, 2019

Flach C, et al. - In patients with first-ever ischemic stroke, researchers studied the short- and long-term connections between statin prescription, stroke recurrence and survival using Cox proportional hazard analyses. Data were gathered for the years 1995–2015 from the population-based South London Stroke Register. According to findings, patients prescribed both pre- and post-stroke statins showed a 24% decrease in mortality, those prescribed pre-stroke statins and then stopped post-stroke showed a higher risk of mortality and recurrence of strokes relative to those not prescribed at any time. Findings suggested no association between pre-stroke statin and severity of the initial stroke overall, although a protective impact against moderate/severe stroke (Glasgow Coma Scale ≤12) was noted in those aged 75+ years. The authors concluded that statins play an important role in improving post-stroke survival rates. It is necessary to monitor adherence to the National Guidelines promoting the treatment of statin, primary and secondary stroke prevention, and to focus on programs for quality improvement.
