The impact of pneumococcal vaccination on bacterial and viral pneumonia in western Australian children: Record linkage cohort study of 469,589 births, 1996–2012
Clinical Infectious Diseases Mar 25, 2018
Fathima P, et al. - The impact of Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) on all-cause and pathogen-specific pneumonia hospitalizations was assessed in Western Australian (WA) children aged ≤16 years. Following PCV introduction, significant declines were observed in all-cause pneumonia hospitalizations across all age groups. Findings thereby indicated PCV to have had an impact on hospitalizations for pneumonia, suggesting that the pneumococcus is likely to play a role in both bacterial and viral pneumonia. In childhood pneumonia, respiratory viruses remain an important pathogen.
