The impact of persistent pediatric obstructive sleep apnea on the quality of life of patients’ families
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Oct 17, 2019
Bergeron M, et al. - In this prospective case series, researchers quantified the quality of life (QOL) for families of children affected by persistent obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and evaluated factors contributing to the negative impact of OSA on families. From 2014 to 2016, patients with persistent OSA referred to the clinic were included. It included families of 67 patients (mean age was 12.5 years). Down syndrome was the single most common comorbidity. Data reported that the mean obstructive apnea-hypopnea index was 9.7 ± 10.3 events/hour. A significant association was found between persistent OSA severity and the FIQ negative impact of disease score on patients’ families. Financial burden issues were more prevalent for OSA children's families than those without OSA. This indicates that targeted interventions can provide some relief for families, particularly with regard to the financial burden of persistent OSA diagnosis and management.
