The impact of hemodialysis on mortality risk and cause of death in Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis

BMC Nephrology Sep 09, 2018

Chaudry MS, et al. - In a hemodialysis-treated end-stage kidney disease- (ESKD) and a non-ESKD population with staphylococcus (S.) aureusendocarditis, researchers analyzed the causes and risk factors of mortality. They found hemodialysis-treated ESKD patients with S. aureus endocarditis in Danish National Registries and non-ESKD patients in The East Danish Database on Endocarditis. Findings revealed that age and diabetes mellitus were independently associated with cardiovascular death. In hemodialysis and non-ESKD patients with S. aureus endocarditis, all-cause in-hospital mortality rates were comparable. However, one-year mortality rates were significantly higher in the hemodialysis population.
