The impact of frailty on perioperative outcomes and resource utilization in sinonasal cancer surgery
The Laryngoscope Apr 19, 2019
Goel AN, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers examined the correlation between preoperative frailty and outcomes in 5346 candidates undergoing sinonasal cancer surgery. They observed frailty in 7.4% of cases. After sinonasal cancer surgery, frailty seemed to have a stronger and more consistent relationship with adverse outcomes and increased resource utilization than age or comorbidity index. They found frail participants with a 3-fold longer median length of stay (12 days vs. 4 days) and more than 2-fold higher median hospital costs ($44,408 vs $18,660) when compared to nonfrail patients.
