The impact of frailty on outcomes of elderly patients after major vascular surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis
European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Aug 23, 2018
Wang J, et al. - Researchers aimed at evaluating the quality of published evidence of all frailty tools in major vascular surgery. In addition, they determined the effect of frailty on short and long-term outcomes after vascular procedures. In patients who underwent vascular surgery (abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair or lower extremity revascularisation), overall frailty was noted to be associated with a significantly increased risk of 30 day mortality. Short-term mortality in elderly patients after vascular surgery could be predicted with frailty, assessed by functional status. While long-term survival in abdominal aortic repair may be predicted via assessing central muscle mass. They suggest considering frailty assessment in patients scheduled for vascular surgery as frailty is associated with both worse short and long-term outcomes.
