The impact of exercise on cancer mortality, recurrence, and treatment-related adverse effects
Epidemiologic Reviews | Aug 12, 2017
Cormie P, et al. Â Researchers analyzed the evidence regarding the role of exercise in cancer management. For this purpose, they carried out a systematic review and comprehensively summarized the relevant available epidemiologic and randomized controlled trial evidence. They found that the accumulated evidence was supportive of the view that exercise is a crucial adjunct therapy in the management of cancer.
Methods
- Researchers performed literature searches focused on determining the potential impact of exercise on cancer mortality and recurrence and on adverse effects of cancer and its treatment.
Results
- They reviewed a total of 100 studies involving thousands of individual patients whose exercise behavior was assessed following the diagnosis of any type of cancer.
- Findings demonstrated that compared with patients who performed no/less exercise, patients who exercised following a diagnosis of cancer were observed to have a lower relative risk of cancer mortality and recurrence and experienced fewer/less severe adverse effects.
