The impact of Emergency Department patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) on the incidence of chronic pain following trauma and non-traumatic abdominal pain
Anaesthesia Nov 01, 2018
Rockett M, et al. - Researchers conducted this opportunistic observational study to examine individuals with traumatic injuries or abdominal pain 6 months after hospital admission via the emergency department. They also assessed how the prevalence of persistent pain is influenced by use of patient-controlled analgesia during the emergency phase of care. They excluded patients with prior chronic pain states or opioid use. The EQ5D, the Brief Pain Inventory, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale were used to inquire the participants. They noted a common prevalence of persistent pain 6 months following hospital admission, specifically following trauma. As per observations, there was a possibility of achieving attenuation in persistent pain by ensuring better acute pain management.
