The impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing revision total knee arthroplasty

Gu A, et al. - Researchers identified the effect of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on postoperative complications for patients undergoing revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Findings suggested a greater risk for postoperatively developing wound dehiscence, pneumonia, reintubation, renal insufficiency, and renal failure complications in COPD patients than those without COPD. While there were relatively low risks for independent complications, consideration of COPD status was an important factor to consider when selecting surgical candidates and pre-operative risk assessment.
