The impact of carrying supplemental oxygen on exercise capacity and dyspnea in patients with interstitial lung disease
Respiratory Medicine Apr 03, 2018
Ramadurai D, et al. - Researchers assessed the physiologic and symptomatic effect of ambulatory oxygen (O2) delivery devices in clinically stable interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients (with varying disease severity) who received supplementary O2 therapy. Significantly greater dyspnea and shorter distances covered in timed testing were the findings in ILD patients who carried portable O2 vs those who received O2 via a stationary concentrator. The most impact could be seen in patients with the greatest impairment. When prescribing O2, practitioners should alert patients to this impact and help patients decide on the best O2 delivery mode to meet their needs.
