The impact of bariatric surgery on cardiopulmonary function: Analyzing VO2 recovery kinetics
Obesity Surgery Aug 19, 2018
Remígio MI, et al. - Researchers performed a prospective cohort study to determine cardiopulmonary capacity, autonomic heart function, and oxygen recovery kinetics during exercise testing before and after bariatric surgery. they performed symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise testing with 24 patients, 1 week before and 4 months after bariatric surgery. Surgery led to an obvious cardiac autonomic improvement. In the analysis not corrected for body weight, patients undergoing bariatric surgery showed lower maximum oxygen consumption despite the improvement in exercise tolerance. As per outcomes, an improvement in the recovery kinetics of oxygen consumption was evident, a novel index of cardiac reserve capacity, among patients undergoing bariatric surgery.
