The impact of an enhanced recovery after minimally invasive surgery program on opioid use in gynecologic oncology patients undergoing hysterectomy
Gynecologic Oncology Feb 24, 2020
Weston E, Noel M, Douglas K, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective study with patients receiving minimally invasive hysterectomy on a gynecologic oncology service, to assess the influences of an enhanced recovery after minimally invasive surgery (MIS-ERAS) protocol on opioid demands as well as postoperative pain in these patients. A comparison was performed for opioid use (oral morphine equivalents) and postoperative pain scores between patients receiving minimally invasive hysterectomy pre and post MIS-ERAS protocol implementation. Cases with chronic opioid use or chronic pain were eliminated. The MIS-ERAS cohort exhibited lower median intraoperative and inpatient postoperative opioid use. Also, MIS-ERAS patients exhibited lower pain scores. According to the findings, opioid use was effectively reduced during intraoperative as well as postoperative phases of care by implementing an enhanced recovery after minimally invasive surgery protocol among gynecologic oncology patients receiving minimally invasive hysterectomy.
