Blumenthal KG, et al. - The impact of a reported penicillin allergy on the development of surgical site infections (SSIs) was ascertained. Findings revealed a 50% increased odds of SSI among patients with a reported penicillin allergy, attributable to the receipt of second-line perioperative antibiotics. A decrease in SSI risk could be achieved with clarification of penicillin allergies as part of routine preoperative care.
