The high cost of critical care unit over-utilization for patients with NSTE ACS
American Heart Journal May 26, 2018
Diepen SV, et al. - Experts evaluated the potential cost saving if all hospitals adopted low critical care unit (CCU) utilization practices for patients with non-ST-Segment Elevation Acute Coronary Syndromes (NSTE ACS). Findings suggested a wide variation of CCU utilization for patients with NSTE ACS in a population-based contemporary cohort and similar in-hospital mortality between low, medium and high utilization centres was seen. Of hospitalization costs, 45% was accounted by CCU care. Therefore, the potential to reduce overall healthcare costs was seen with implementing policies and admission practices to align hospital resources with patient care needs.
