The global epidemiology of hepatitis E virus infection: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Liver International Apr 17, 2020

Li P, Liu J, Li Y, et al. - Researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to map the global prevalence and identify the risk factors of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection. HEV IgG seroprevalence of subgroups were contrasted and risk factors for HEV infection were assessed using odd ratios. Four hundred nineteen related studies were identified which comprised 1,519,872 people. In total, 1,099,717 candidates pooled from 287 studies of the general population estimated a globally anti-HEV IgG seroprevalence of 12.47%. Data reported that the pooled estimates of anti-HEV IgM seroprevalence based on 98 studies was 1.47% and the overall estimate of HEV viral RNA positive rate in the general population was 0.20%. Raw meat consumption, soil exposure, blood transfusion, traveling to endemic areas, contact with dogs, living in rural areas and receive education less than elementary school have been reported as risk factors for anti-HEV IgG positivity. Globally, nearly 939 million corresponding to 1 in 8 people have ever had HEV infection. It was noted that 15 to 110 million people suffer from a recent or ongoing HEV infection. The report highlights the substantial burden of HEV infection and calls for further regular screening and preventive measures.
