The frequency of contraception documentation and women with systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis within the RISE registry
Arthritis Care & Research Oct 17, 2021
Clowse MEB, Li J, Talabi MB, et al. - Contraception documentation for women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was examined using the RISE (Rheumatology Informatics System for Effectiveness) Registry, and differences by teratogen prescription and patient race and ethnicity were investigated.
Data of a total of 9,826 women of childbearing age with SLE and 19,009 with RA were documented in 2018; 9.1% of these had any contraception documented.
For women with SLE, significantly lower rates of contraceptive documentation was done.
Contraception documentation was less frequent for women of Hispanic ethnicity, Black and Asian race relative to White women.
For women with RA, higher rates of contraception documentation was observed in correlation with teratogen prescription but this was not evident for women with SLE.
Overall, large gaps exist in contraception documentation within the RISE registry and among women of color, these gaps are particularly stark.
While contraception use is likely underestimated in these data, they highlight that a systematic approach is not applied by most rheumatologists to collecting and recording this information in the EHR.
