The Focused Ultrasound Myoma Outcome Study (FUMOS); A retrospective cohort study on long-term outcomes of MR-HIFU therapy
European Radiology Feb 15, 2020
Verpalen IM, de Boer JP, Linstra M, et al. - A retrospective cohort study was conducted to investigate long-term results after magnetic resonance image-guided high-intensity-focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) therapy, primarily to evaluate the reintervention rate. Between 2010 to 2017, data was retrospectively obtained from 123 individuals treated with MR-HIFU at our hospital. Treatment failures, adverse events, and the nonperfused volume percentage (NPV%) were ascertained. Researchers compared restrictive treatment protocols with unrestrictive (aiming for complete ablation) treatments. Subgroups were examined based on the achieved NPV < 50 or ≥ 50%. NPV% was significantly increased by the unrestrictive treatment protocol. Comparable to other reimbursed uterine-sparing treatments, unrestrictive MR-HIFU treatments led to acceptable reintervention rates, and no reinterventions were recorded beyond 21 months follow-up.
