The first year of treatment predicts the prognosis of asthma over 25 y—A prospective study
Allergy Jan 16, 2020
Kauppinen R, et al. - By performing this investigator-driven, real-life follow-up study, researchers analyzed 162 patients with adult-onset steroid-naïve, newly diagnosed asthma, to analyze treatment outcomes over the 25-year course of the disease as well as to determine if long-term prognosis could be predicted by the first treatment year's forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1). In the 25-year evaluations, 83% of the 133 living patients participated. At this visit, assessments were performed with basic asthma tests including lung function, and questionnaires for health-related quality of life (HRQoL), GINA and the Asthma Control Test. Seemingly, the level of FEV1 achieved during the first treatment year appeared as a predictor of later lung function level in adult-onset asthma. Treatment discontinuation was reported in one quarter of the patients, and the HRQoL of these patients was found to be better compared with that of those continuing to use ICS. Only 16% of the patients achieved clinical remission, which is in concordance with other investigations.
